Bass Lake Lumber’s roots run deep in Grantsburg, Wisconsin. What began as Allen Selander Construction, Inc. in the late 1960s soon grew into a full-service lumberyard when Allen and Charlotte Selander purchased the old Bass Lake School property in 1971. Locals began stopping in to buy materials, and Bass Lake Lumber was born—built on craftsmanship, integrity, and neighborly service.
Over the years, their children Dean, Craig, and Lynn each played important roles in growing the business and serving the community. Today, that legacy continues with their granddaughter, Jen, the third generation to carry forward the family’s dedication to personal service and support.
In 2025, Bass Lake Lumber became a branch of Scherer Bros. Lumber Co., a fellow family-owned company that has served builders and contractors for nearly 100 years. That transition brought expanded access to industry-leading products, custom millwork, and specialty services, while keeping the local spirit our customers have always counted on.
We’re proud to keep serving the Northwoods from the same schoolhouse office where it all began—still local, still reliable, and always ready to help.
Originally a two-room brick schoolhouse, Bass Lake School served the community from 1939 to 1967. Built as part of a WPA project during the Great Depression, it was a cornerstone of local life, with classrooms known as the Big Room and the Little Room. End-of-year picnics, snowy recesses, and Miss Christopherson’s plays on the lower-level stage are still fondly remembered by many—including three of our own team members who once attended school right here. What was once a place for learning is now a place for building. And we like to think that same sense of care and community still lives in these walls.
